How do you photograph a toddler during a maternity session?
Toddlers rarely hold a pose long enough for a traditional photoshoot. Plan short interactions instead: standing beside mom, holding hands, sitting on the floor, or giving the belly a quick kiss.
Marina, who did a family session with her husband and kids, said: "My husband usually does not like taking photos, and our kids are so mobile it is hard to gather everyone. In this studio, the whole family got excited. We took cool family maternity photos without pressure, everything stayed private, and even the kids ran their own shooting for a while. They loved it."
Let them move between clicks. The self-portrait format helps because you are not paying for a photographer to reset everyone every thirty seconds.
Daughter and sibling ideas
Older siblings often do better when they have a simple job: stand close, hold hands, or hug mom from the side. Ask for one frame, review it on the screen, and move on.
Matching outfits are optional. Coordinated neutrals usually look cleaner than forcing identical dresses for everyone.
Family standing and seated setups
A classic family maternity frame is mom in the center with partner and child on either side. Seated setups work well if anyone is tired or if you want a softer nursery-style image.
White and warm neutral backdrops are the safest starting points for mixed ages and outfit colors.
What to bring for children
Bring a small snack, a comfort item, and shoes that are easy on and off. If your child has a favorite simple outfit, pack it as a backup. Avoid anything with large graphics or neon colors that pull attention away from faces.
- One backup outfit for the child
- Hair tie or brush
- Small snack for after the first few frames
- A toy only if it photographs cleanly
- Extra patience: short bursts beat one long pose
How much session time do families actually need?
Express is too short for most family maternity sessions. Signature gives you 45 minutes for outfit changes, partner frames, and a few child interactions. Spotlight adds more time if you want a dramatic backdrop or a slower pace.
Infants under one are free and do not count toward the three-person limit on Signature and Spotlight.
Why Signature beats Express for families
Families need transition time. Someone always needs a bathroom break, a shirt fixed, or one more try. Signature includes all backdrop colors and enough room for three people, which is why most family maternity clients choose it over Express.
