The renovation photos are not here for fake relatability. They are here because they tell the truth: before HQ Portraits looked polished, it was two regular people with paint, drills, a ladder, and a very specific idea.
We wanted a studio that feels professional without asking anyone to perform like a model. So we built the room, tried the awkward poses first, and kept the humor in the story.

Origin story
It started with a birthday photo that almost didn't happen
Leonid needed professional photos of the kids for a birthday milestone. Simple enough, right? Except booking a photographer meant two weeks of back-and-forth emails, a session squeezed between other clients, and three small children who had zero interest in holding still for a stranger with a camera.
The photos came out fine. But the experience felt forced. Stiff poses, awkward smiles, a photographer giving directions nobody was feeling. Sound familiar?
That was the moment the idea clicked.
What if there was a studio with professional lighting and a real camera, but no photographer standing over your shoulder? A place where you could walk in, close the door, and just be yourself. Take five shots or five hundred. Try something bold you would never try with someone watching. Get photos that actually look like you, not some version of you performing for a stranger.
Leonid had spent years in e-commerce technology, building systems that make complicated things feel effortless. Olga brought an eye for design and an obsession with getting the details right. Together, they had the photography background, the technical skills, and now the reason to use them.
HQ Portraits opened in 2025 as the first self-portrait studio in Charlotte. Not a selfie museum. Not a photo booth. A real photography studio with professional-grade equipment, studio lighting, and curated backdrops, where you are both the subject and the director.

Every session at HQ Portraits uses professional studio lighting calibrated for portrait photography, a high-resolution camera system, and a live preview mirror shaped like an Instagram frame so you can see exactly how you look in real time. You hold a wireless remote. You click when the moment feels right.
We designed a photo processing system that works entirely without human intervention. Your images are ready within minutes, not weeks. And here is something no other studio in Charlotte offers: you can choose to have your photos saved directly to a USB drive with nothing stored in the cloud. No server, no third party, no one else ever sees them.
That matters. It matters if you are a new mom capturing a maternity session and want those photos to stay completely private. It matters if you want intimate portraits that are just for you and your partner. It matters if you simply believe your photos are your business and nobody else's.
Family-owned, Charlotte-rooted
We are Leonid and Olga, and HQ Portraits is our family project.
We moved to Charlotte because the city feels like it is still figuring itself out in the best possible way. There is real creative energy here, new neighborhoods popping up, small businesses doing interesting things. The Queen City deserved a portrait studio that matched that energy - something modern, tech-forward, and built for real people, not just professional models.
Running a family business means we are personally invested in every detail. The backdrops, the lighting angles, the birthday party packages with balloons and styled props, the designer furniture for editorial-quality shots - we chose all of it ourselves. When you book a session, you are booking a space that two people who genuinely care about photography spent months getting right.
